The Mercury Milan is a mid-size sedan that was based on the Mazda-designed Ford CD3 platform and distributed by Mercury. It is a twin of the Ford Fusion, while being slotted below the luxury-spec Lincoln MKZ (formerly Lincoln Zephyr) sedan. The Milan was first shown at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show, and was sold in the United States (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), Mexico, and the Middle East. With Ford eliminating the Mercury division, production of the Milan ended December 17, 2010. It is named for the Italian city of Milan.

The Milan differs from the Fusion by featuring unique front and rear fascia designs, LED taillight clusters, projector head lamps and fog lamps, and an upgraded interior. The Milan filled the lineup gap following the discontinuation of both the Mercury Mystique in 2000 and the Mercury Sable in 2005, becoming the entry-level Mercury sedan. The Milan is available in six packaged variants: I4, V6, I4 Premier, V6 Premier, V6 AWD, and Premier AWD. As of 2008, only the I4 and I4 Premier are offered in the Middle East. In the 2007 model, the "MILAN" badging was added at the doors. In 2009 they added the VOGA package which included white leather seats and exclusive chrome rims.

The Milan four cylinder comes standard with a five-speed manual, and is available with optional five-speed automatic, while V6 Milans come equipped only with a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive (AWD) was added as an available option for the 2007 model year, but only for the V6 equipped vehicles. Additionally, a DVD navigation system has been added to the option list while a console-mounted MP3 auxiliary jack was added as a standard feature in all 2007 Milans built as "Job 2" cars (the MP3 jack is not present in 2007 Job 1 cars). Job 2 cars also enjoy a boost in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) safety rating by having had certain interior panels replaced with those of different materials, thus increasing the safety rating for side impact protection.

2010 revision

The 2010 Mercury Milan debuted at the 2008 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show alongside the 2010 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. It received significant cosmetic updates, with new front and rear fascias, revised wheel designs, and a redesigned dashboard. A DVD entertainment system was added to the Hybrid models. Engine options consist of the Duratec 25 four cylinder and Duratec 30 V6. A hybrid version is also offered, with an Atkinson cycle variant of the Duratec 25 gasoline engine paired with a 106-horsepower AC synchronous electric motor and continuously variable transmission.

The Mercury Milan Hybrid was launched to the U.S. market in March 2009 as a 2010 model, together with its twin the Ford Fusion Hybrid. Ford set a modest sales target of about 25,000 vehicles a year for the Fusion and Milan hybrids. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ratings for the Mercury Milan and Ford Fusion hybrid versions are 41 miles per US gallon (5.7 L/100 km; 49 mpg-imp) for city and 36 miles per US gallon (6.5 L/100 km; 43 mpg-imp) for highway. When driving on electric-only mode (EV mode) the Fusion can achieve 47 mph and up to 2 miles of continuous EV driving. In city driving a full tank delivers 700 miles (1,126.5 km).

All non-hybrid 2010 Milans are equipped with 6-speed transmissions; as with the 2006-2009 versions, the manual gearbox is only available with the four cylinder engine. V6 models gain a "SelectShift" feature that allows drivers to select and hold individual gears.

The Milan ended production during the fourth quarter 2010 along with the rest of the Mercury brand.
